About La Campania

Campania is a region of Italy, and is also linked to the word Campagna which in Italian literarly means “Country” or “Country-side”. It encompasses a way of life that is linked to an agricultural style. Campania the region is a State in Italy, just belowLazio (where Rome is the capital) and just north of Calabria. It is on the Mediterean Coast of Italy. Naples is the Capital of Campania. This is where our parents, and grandparents on our Father's side immigrated from in the late 1960's.

Map of Italy with Regions and Capitals

Most of our Mother's family is still located in Naples. Naples is an exceptionally diverse culture as it was and is an important and strategic port. It was first settled by the Greeks, (Napoli stems from the Greek word Neo Polis which means New City in Greek), Then ruled from different periods by the Spanish and French Aristocracy. In fact, on one end of the Bay of Naples lies the palace of the French Monarchy and on the opposite end that of the Spanish Monarchy. Accordingly, there are many different cooking styles rolled into one. Our Father's family in Naples for generations owned a food store/restaurant which specialized in baking traditional breads.

While our cooking borrows from this heritage it can also be described in a unique style as Gourmet Italian. Our chef John Maione was a student at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island and worked for several years at the Aujourd’hui restaurant in the Four Seasons in Boston. Accoringly, there are influences of French cooking, particularly in the dessert arena. In fact, the French southern coast of Provence is quite similar in culture, architecture, and food to that of it's Italian neighbor.

For the past 3 years Campania has been listed in the Zagat Survey top 40 restaurants in Boston, and have been included in Zagat's nation-wide top places to dine. We have currently been invited by the Wine Spectator magazine to participate in their national rankings for top restaurants that offer fine wine.
